A Tribute to Valentine’s Day (Special)
*The pictures in this article, are a tribute to LOVE. We would like to take a moment to thank these people who make love look so beautiful. Thank You.*
"Young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep-burning, unquenchable." (Author Unknown)
Every February, across the world, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure.
Did You Know: Cupid, the child-like, wing deity often associated with our modern Valentine's Day, is the son of Venus, the Roman goddess of LOVE. In Greek mythology, Cupid is known as Aphrodite's son Eros.
Interesting isn't it? It's good to know a little about the day you're celebrating, rather than just going with the flow. Valentine's Day sure kicks in the mood for LOVE. Receiving gifts is one thing, but expressing it, is what that matters. Many a times, Love is associated with pain but like the saying goes "NO pain, NO gain!" -very true, as it teaches one to see underneath not all, but most imperfections. I've seen people in love and it’s indeed beautiful. The special glow that radiates on the face leaving a smile at the end of the lips, is definitely sensational. What more can you ask for than to wake up each day lying next to someone you can fall in love with everyday; even if it means watching that same face grow old and wrinkly? Adorable, don't you think?
I remember nursing this old Indian lady from Madras (India), who had so much to talk about Love. Her English was so profound and smart, because apparently she was a Literature Teacher in her younger days.
As she started, I thought "Oh no, here comes a bed time story!" But something about the way she described love that actually made me think. She said that she has been married for 43 years to the man of her dreams. By the way, she's 60 years old now. She was 17 when her parents decided to get her married off to a man 9 years her senior. Scared and confused, she met him. "I was having butterflies in my stomach and my heart was pounding so hard as I walked out to meet this man whom I have to live with for the rest of my life! And there he was, all nicely dressed and hair combed to the side with flowers in his hands. He was such a good-looking catch, I'm telling you!"
I laughed after she said that. I mean, come on, men back then were so nerdish-looking and here she is telling me that he was good-looking! She went on talking about the life after marriage, she kept saying that "He is good man......". Then came the part when she mentioned, "You know, when I fell sick (she's having end stage heart failure now), he hugged me tightly and told me, "You were the best thing that happened to me." The look on his eyes gave me butterflies, even after so many years." That bit caught my attention immediately. I was really taken aback. Does this even happen in our Asian society? It's so hard to watch our Singaporean Indian men go all mellow like softies. Ladies, if you feel me, put your hands up!
"My heart contains endless love, So pure, warm and true. A love stronger than any other, A love for only you."
Since it's Valentine's Day, why not find out how lovers celebrate this very special occasion. I got the chance to catch up with Mr. Vengadash who shared with us his most romantic Valentine, with Ms Samutra, his soul-mate.
Mr Vengadash, what was the most romantic thing you have ever done for Ms Samutra, on Valentines' day?
"We were dating for 3 years so on the 3rd year, I booked a Star Cruise with balcony view room on Valentines' day. As the ship started sailing, I proposed to her with a diamond ring. Now we're happily married for 4 years."
Do you think it's important to openly express your Love to your partner?
"I think it's important to openly express it once in a while to my partner as it reassures her about the way I feel about her, hence making her feel good about it too."
So, is married life a good thing as compared with your dating days?
"More responsibilities, plus you see each other everyday. Any disagreement, you have to settle it there and then. But if you love the person, you would want to see them everyday, and i love Samutra so YES, it's a good thing."
Laying underneath the stars,
On a warm silent night,
Your arms are wrapped around me,
And everything feels right.
You kiss me sweet and softly,
I feel your warm gentle touch,
You help me feel protected,
Under the sweet, night-sky rush
My world before me is perfect.
There's nowhere else I want to be,
Except laying underneath the stars
Hand in hand, you and me.
Just when everything is perfect,
And you seem so delicately sweet,
A rush of wind comes past me,
As I'm swept beneath my feet
Nothing could be more right,
There's nowhere else I want to be.
Let's take a walk, my only love,
Hand in hand, you and me
To sum up, LOVE is very special in its own way. Why not take this Valentines' Day as an opportunity to express it to your partner, or to that friend who gives you butterflies everytime he/she smiles. You don't need to find the perfect reason to Love. Love itself solves to the imperfection. So sort out your differences and make this Valentines' Day a special one. With that, Singaporeindians.com crew would like to wish everyone in love a Happy Valentines' Day!
